Today, I’d like to introduce a masterpiece confection from Meigetsudo called Hakata Torimon.
Hakata Torimon has won the Monde Selection award for 23 consecutive years, and it’s Meigetsudo’s No.1 product.
It’s a well-known souvenir not only among people from Fukuoka and Kyushu, but also widely recognized by visitors from all over Japan.

What Is Hakata Torimon Like? My Personal Review of This Famous Fukuoka Souvenir
This time, I bought the Hakata Torimon 5-piece pack (plastic wrap) for ¥720.

I’ve seen this packaging so many times — just looking at it makes my mouth water with happiness (lol).

Looking at the cross section…
It’s packed with white bean paste — nearly 90% of it!
But this balance is just perfect. Any less white bean paste, and it wouldn’t feel like a true Torimon.
If there were less filling, the satisfaction you get from eating just one wouldn’t be the same.
What I especially love about Torimon is its distinct milky sweetness. As it’s called a Japanese-Western style sweet, it offers a different kind of sweetness than typical wagashi.
The white bean paste is generously blended with butter and fresh cream, all carefully selected ingredients that give it a refined sweetness. The smooth texture also makes it slide down your throat before you know it.
Once again, I was reminded — Torimon is truly an exceptional sweet.
Many souvenirs can feel quite similar, but Torimon is one of a kind. Maybe there’s something out there that tastes like it, but if you ever find one, please let me know!
